Standard International Rally 2015 – A personal account
Lynda and I set off on Friday morning in the ‘56 Standard 10, arriving at the Toddington Railway at 1pm. There was time to take a pint of Donnington’s Gold and a smoked trout salad in the Pheasant Inn before the train ride.
There was some confusion about whether the road run could take place as the main road through Winchcombe, we were told, had been shut all day due to resurfacing. Some of the party had planned and set off on an alternative route avoiding Winchcombe but several of us decided to brave the original route. Well, Winchcombe was open for business though we had to be careful to avoid the “raised ironworks” and the road closed signs, which certainly kept a good number of the locals away from our route.
There then followed a second gear climb up Bellas Knap not helped by a sharp left hand turn at the top. Once there however the run down the valley through a number of pretty villages was exceedingly pretty, and made the climb very worthwhile.
Darrel and Josephine were manning the Rally control when we arrived at the Cheltenham Chase. We were delighted to receive a commemorative keyfob as we previously just had the loose keys for the Standard 10. Problem solved!
The informal buffet followed with a chance to catch up with the 100 or so other participants, old and new.
On Saturday we set off to the Jet age museum in time for its opening at 10am. The Museum had reserved an area of their carpark for our use, right next to the nose section of their Avro Vulcan V-
Coffee followed from the Museum’s tea shop, then it was off on the 25 mile run to Adam Henson’s Cotswolds Farm Park. Whilst we were warned about the first hill, Birdlip, no one warned us of the following two steep hills on the way to the park. But we made it and a quick check of the radiator when we arrived assured us that no water had boiled away.
A splendid Pea and Mint soup for lunch then a tour of the Farm, with rare breeds and much to interest us. A run back to the hotel was accomplished without incident. The Gala Dinner went down well, as did our table quiz completion consisting of “Standard” and “General knowledge” questions. We seemed to get the level about right as the winning table managed a score of 33 out of 40. The winners were the “Charlecote” table consisting of Graham and Peter Lockley, Len Barr, Paul Newsome, John and Brenda Worby and Peter and Sandra Smith.
Then into the Bar whilst the weaker-
Sunday saw Rally control move to the Rally field whilst the cars were laid out according to a plan set up by Steve O’Hara. There was much activity over at the Bring and But stall and the Regalia stall was doing well. The hotel laid on a bar-
That was to the day visitors only of course since many of us chose to extend our stay at the splendid hotel by another evening’s bed and breakfast.
I would like to thank all the committee and their volunteer helpers, all playing at least a small part in making the weekend so enjoyable. We welcome more participants next year. The 57th Rally will take place over the weekend of 24th-

Ann and I want to say how much we enjoyed the Rally last weekend.
It was a splendid event and we appreciate all the hard work you and the committee put in to bring it together.
The Hotel was ideal on all counts, the staff courteous and helpful.
We are ‘new kids’ yet most warmly welcomed by Club members and quickly made to feel at home.
Useful advice and tips were freely given and we have loads of happy memories.
We are sure next year at Sutton Scotney will be just as good.
