The Government has issued a
consultative White Paper that discusses options for removing the
necessity to carry out an MoT on cars over a certain age. A
number of suggestions for cut-off dates are made.
You must read the paper before
commenting on it and the paper can be found by clicking on this
link
You are invited to comment on the
paper in an online survey issued by the Federation. The
Committee of this Club wishes to comment on the paper in this
manner:
"Whilst the removal of the
requirement to MOT our cars if built before a certain date may
initially seem attractive, we wish to draw member's attention to
the following points before asking you to complete your formal
response
1. The MoT is a crucial safety
check and ensures that all vehicles, including yours are not a
hazard to yourself and to others, at least on the day of the
test.
2. Buying a car with no MoT will
become fraught with difficulty - how will you know that the
owner has maintained it?
3. The first un-MoTed car that is
involved in a serious or fatal accident will cause the rules to
be reversed and re-imposition of MoT testing
4. As a consequence of 3 above,
Classic Car owners may well be branded as murders or potential
murderers by the "popular" press
5. Insurance premiums will be
increased for non-MoT-ed cars as Insurance companies will regard
them as a higher risk. They may even refuse to insure them.
6. We suspect that removal of the
MoT may lead to restriction in use, eg no night driving as
lights unproven, etc.
Please consider these points for a
while, do you really want a non-MoTed car?
With one exception, the committee
of this Club has voted to keep the MoT rules as is.
You are now invited, individually,
to complete the FHBVC survey here
Please use this opportunity to ensure your view is heard.
