Fun with the Bristol Group at Sherborne Castle

Steve Smeltzer, the Club's organiser, 2nd from right , with a happy band of Members in the grounds of Sherborne Castle

Lynda and I were returning from an assignment in deepest Devon in our modern transport, but we decided to drop in on the Club's stand at Sherborne Castle.

It didn't seem like a wise move as the heavens opened as we queued to get into the venue.

However, we were warmly greeted by Club Members from a wide area. Not just the local Bristol Group but also a contingent from Devon and Cornwall on one of their frequent forays up-country. Also already there were Geoff and Sharon Catermoul up from the New Forest area.

Fortunately The group had brought along a Club Gazebo and initially at least we were all forced to shelter in it. However the kettle always seemed to be on, so everyone was well refreshed with copious volumes of coffee and tea!

As the weather improved during the morning, everyone managed to venture out to inspect the large number of Club stands and attractions. Many members took the opportunity to tour the Castle itself and declared it most interesting though more of a stately home than a fortified castle.

Also we were able to witness the arrival of a Veteran Car Run that swelled the ranks of the cars attending on the day.

A list of Club Cars and Members attending:

  • Geoff and Sharon Catermoul - Vanguard Vignale
  • Geoff and Shaon's friends  - Vanguard Phase III
  • Chris and Lynda Bowden - Standard 8
  • Steve and Karen Lovegrove - 1934 Standard Tourer
  • Steve Smeltzer - V4 Tourer
  • Roy and Julie Horne - 1938 Flying 12 Drophead Coupé
  • Peter Pope - Vanguard Phase II Diesel

Also the following in non-Standard Transport

  • Bob Richardson ( Honorary Member)
  • Phil and Lynda Homer
  • Tony in the MGB

Our thanks go in particular to organiser Steve Smeltzer who managed to get all the stand into his 1927 Car. If you would like to attend next year - call Steve on 07599 336444

At least 3 of the company here were warming up their cars for a 10 day Standard Motor Club holiday in North Yorkshire. I hope to be sent a report on that event shortly.
