Devon and Cornwall Group
At Powderham Castle

1935 Standard 9 2 door Saloon
The
D&C Group continue to be active at Shows and Events, which is why they get
so many entries on this website. Below, Steve Smeltzer makes a visit to the
Event at Powderham Castle:
| It
seems to have become an annual trip for me to the Powderham Castle Classic Car
Show and sample the legendary Devon and Cornwall group hospitality. This year
I decided to vary my route and visit a couple of museums "on the
way". My first port of call was the Motoring Memories Museum at
Colyford near Seaton. This is a small museum located in the former village
garage, it only houses 5 vehicles, but has a large collection of automobilia
and is definitely well worth a visit.
On
leaving Colyford I pointed the radiator in the direction of Exmouth and the
Museum of Country Life. As the name implies this museum contains
all aspects of rural life including recreated period shops, steam engines,
cars,
bikes,
trucks
and machinery. After a lap of the museum and suitably refreshed in the
tearooms, it was time to do battle with the rushour traffic in Exeter and head
for Powderham.

1932 Little 9 |
My
later than usual arrival left little time to book into my accommodation
before the evening road run left for Teignmouth, where the participating cars
were displayed on the Den. Daniel and Matthew Skinner bravely travelled in the
dickey seat in Chris and Linda's Avon tourer despite the falling
temperature. After a welcome cup of tea the Standard contingent departed for
fish and chips in Dawlish and then back to the beer tent at Powderham. Before
over indulging I returned to my accommodation (which just happened to be in a
local hostelry) where a few liquid sleeping tablets were in order.
On
arrival at the club stand on Saturday
morning Chris Bowden had arranged for the Standards to be paraded around the
ring which we managed to a commentary by Chris (once he had worked which end of
the microphone to talk into). A few deals were done in the autojumble and the
odd visit made to the beer tent, while numerous cups of tea were provided on
the club stand.
|
| A former owner of John and Julia Pine's Little Nine made a
presentation to them in appreciation of the finished restoration. Late
afternoon it was time for people to disperse and prepare for the now
traditional meal at The Swan Inn. A jolly time was had by all before some of us
adjourned to the beer tent, after which I returned to my accommodation to
partake of a few Otter Ales with the locals.
I
felt a touch fragile as I arrived on Sunday morning to find most of the
Standards already assembled and being marshalled into place by Chris Bowden
and Steve Lovegrove.
It
was an impressive display with 16 cars. It was again a busy stand with various
visitors during the day and a celebration of Linda Bowden's birthday
