The Devon
and Cornwall Group's Annual Lunch, 2010

Where are the pasties?
Members of the Devon and Cornwall Groups met on Sunday 31st January for our
annual get together. Lunch was arranged at the Royal Standard public
house in Mary Tavy, Devon, a mid way point for both groups.
The date had been well advertised in the club magazine and on the website and
twenty seven members and their partners and friends were expected.
As the date came closer the weather took at turn for the worse with snow
deposited overnight on the previous two nights, making Chris very nervous.
However Standard owners are a hardy lot and although we were very short on
classic cars on the day, due to risk of heavy snow showers, everyone attended
as planned. There was an interesting story from one member who gave his
passengers an unexpected trip around the lanes, following a lapse in
concentration, but everyone arrived safely in one piece, despite some very
heavy snow showers.
It was remarked by one of our newer members that the pub car park did resemble
a four by four convention, but we all agreed given the weather conditions the
day was about meeting up and spending time together. Classic cars there
on the day were Steve and Karen Lovegrove in their Triumph and Peter and Stuart
Starbuck in their MGB GT.
Chris had almost had a heart attack when he rang to reconfirm our booking
before Christmas, to be told that the pub was now in new hands. However
they confirmed they could still accommodate us for lunch.
By the amount of chatter that accompanied lunch it was a great success.
Something which could not be said of the chef’s attempt at a decent custard,
however it did cause a great deal of humour amongst those who flooded both
plate and table.
Despite a shaky service from the new owners the lunch was viewed a great
success, new friendships were formed and promised parts exchanged hands.
Chris and I would like to thank everyone who made the effort to attend and we
look forward to seeing you all at the next event arranged by Brian Murrish a
run to the "Cornwall at War" Museum at Camelford, on the 18th
April. Ring Brian on 01872 560477 or email on mailto:hawksworth147@talktalk.net
