Whilst Mrs Webmaster and I had never intended to attend
this event on Saturday 6th June, we were glad we had made that
decision! It seems that the site had over 2 inches of rain in the
previous 24 hours which must have put a bit of a damper on the
proceedings. I understand that the roadrun to the Avoncroft museum
was abandoned, as all the attractions are outside, and an
alternative trip was arranged to the Worcestershire Museum at
Hartlebury Castle.
However, when we joined the rally
for the Saturday evening meal the weather was already drying up. In
fact the sun was trying to shine as we arrived at the
"Oak" at Upton Snodsbury near Worcester. About 30 members
were in attendance and a sociable evening was enjoyed
by everyone.
More
rain was encountered overnight and Lynda and I thought that the
Sunday 7th June was about to be similarly ruined. However, as the
forecast promised, the sky began to clear about 10am, so we set off
in hope in the 1934 10. By the time we arrived at Spetchley Park,
shortly after 11.00am, the sun had started to shine to greet our
arrival.
This
rally was originally organised by Alan and May Withey, as they have
done for at least the last 20 years. Unfortunately May is presently
unwell and in hospital so we all signed a card to send to her with
all our best wishes for a speedy recovery. Although Alan joined
us for the Saturday meal he was unable to do so on Sunday, so
we wish him all the best for a return to good health soon. So this
year the organisation was taken over by John and Rachel Maxwell, who
also did a fine job. Spetchley Park is another house owned by the
Berkley Family. If that sounds familiar its because its the same
family that own Berkeley Castle in Gloucestershire. So this was the
second event that the Club has attended on their properties in
the last two weeks. A good representation from Postwar cars on this
occassion, principally 8's, 10's Pennants, Vanguards, Ensign and a
6cwt Van, but only 2 prewar attendees, a Flying 12 and ourselves in
the oldest participant, the 1934 Standard 10.
There
were three awards, the first 2 being the result of a popular vote
and the last as a personal choice by the organisers. So the best
pre-48 car was chosen to be the Flying 12 Saloon , which fought off
our 10 into second place, or last place depending on how you look at
it. The Post 48 trophy went to George Thorn's Standard 10. The
judges choice for the final prize went to Ray and Di Ferris's
Pennant
