on The Gala Dinner

The Celebratory
Cake was paraded at the tables
SATURDAY 27TH JUNE
2008
A highlight of this year's
event was the formal dinner on Saturday night.
Unfortunately it didn't
start too well, it has to be admitted. Due to staff absence, both of the
bars available to us for pre-dinner drinks were understaffed so it took
rather longer than it should for everyone to get served. Nothing should
stand in the way of a thirsty group of Standard members looking for a
refreshing pint after being out in the (very) hot sun all day! However,
get served we did and sat down for dinner at 7.30pm in the Kenneth Russell
Room.
We were seated at 11 round
tables, those are so much better for conversation to take place between
all the diners. Len had given all the tables names, the names of Standard
models. Innovatively, there was no top table so no cliquey committee table.
Instead, a committee member was allocated to be host on each of the
tables.

After the dinner, Lynda took
us through the answers to an impromptu quiz that she has given out earlier
as a table ice-breaker. This consisted of the task of matching the
names of 25 countries to their national flags. Much to everyone's surprise
this resulted in a tie. Two teams got all 25 answers correct, Avon and
Vanguard. So it was necessary to ask a tie-breaker. The question was:
" How many votes did the Labour party poll in the 2005 General
election?" As the "Avon" team got closest to the actual
number they were declared the winners and all 10 members received a prize
for their splendid efforts.
Then came the speeches:
First Robert Browett of
Browett's the former main Standard dealers for Leicester, spoke about his
life as an International Playboy, sorry that should read Service Manager,
but he prefers the first title. That was followed by Paul Newsome of
Newsomes the former main Standard dealer in Coventry who talked about the
demise of the British Motor Industry and what a good job we were doing of
keeping the Standard marque alive.
