Mrs Webmaster and I
decided to attend this event to support the Northwest Group's
Annual Rally. We set off on Saturday and had booked bed and
breakfast near Leek, not far from Alton Towers. And very good it
was too! Sunday dawned very bright and we were blessed with
glorious early autumn sunshine. We arrived at Froghall Station on
the Churnet Valley line just on 10 am on Sunday.

up the story of the day: |

We reintroduced the
Manchester Group Annual Show, after several years, with a
successful visit to the Froghall Station on the Churnet Valley
Railway in Staffordshire on the 20 September. The Group’s annual
show was previously abandoned when we moved to our present Heywood
venue, because the car park was simply not big enough to
accommodate an increasing number of cars.
We enjoyed sunny and warm weather
for the show, and a good turnout of nearly 50 vehicles, including
14 Standards, 11 Triumphs and an excellent collection of Open
Class cars. |
| We had great support
from the Triumph 2000/2500/2500.5 register with some remarkable
cars, and word had got round to other classic car owners in the
area, resulting in quite a few people wanting to join us at the
show. We were pleased to accommodate them.
The attraction of a classic piece
of railway line and the delights of steam was so irresistible that
many doting car owners simply abandoned their vehicles for the
pleasure of a free train ride. Back in the car park Phil and Lynda
Homer presented the Award for the best Open Class Classic (non
Standard/Triumph) to John Seddon for his magnificent Austin 16.6
Berkley Saloon. |

The Group organiser
presented Phil Homer with an Award for the best ‘Standard or
Triumph’ for his 1937 Flying Standard 12 Coupe. This is the only
model of its kind on the road today, and Phil and Lynda had driven
it all the way from St Albans to be with us .
At the end of the
day the Station Master at Froghall appeared very pleased with all
his visitors, and invited us back next year.

| As it was more than
140 miles home, Lynda and I decided to set off home relatively
early, about 3-45pm as we don't like being caught out after dark
in a prewar car, the headlights just are not up to modern
standards, and we accept that. The Flyer purred contentedly at
45-50mph all the way down the A5 in the gathering twilight.
Perhaps it was pleased at winning it's first prize ever at a
Standard event?
As its late in the year, it got
dark around 7.30pm so we only had the last 15 miles or so in
complete darkness, having covered 285 miles in the weekend |

The Railway really is worth
a visit, and thanks to Andrew, Bryan and all the enthusiastic members in
the area we had a memorable weekend. Look forward to future events. Please
do as we did and make an effort to attend, wherever you are.
