Flying 12 DHC
goes on its holidays - Part 10 and last

1300 miles later the Standard
Flying 12 finally arrives at Stoneleigh
Day 17 and last - Brandon, Coventry to Stoneleigh
Country Show, then St. Albans
Our hotel rate
didn't include Breakfast, but as we had already partaken of 16
cooked breakfasts in a row we decided to forgo it so that we
could be at Stoneleigh, bright and relatively early. There you
are Peter, you now understand the sacrifices we have to make!
Peter Lockley that
is, the Organiser of the Club Stand at the Revival of the Town
and Country Festival, now called the Country Show. This took
place over all three days of the Bank holiday so we were able to
attend on this, the Sunday. He would say that we weren't
particularly early but hey, we are still on our holidays!
The car club
display section of this show was as full as most years but the
rest of the attractions were somewhat thinner than before. We
remember years ago when it would take all three days to see this
show, but that is no more, you could safely see all this show in
half a day so a day there was more than enough.
Peter had
persuaded a good selection of Standards and their owners to
attend, though at close on 1300 miles you might have thought we
should come in for some sort of distance award. It wasn't to be!
The photos show
some of the other Standards at the show, as usual you can click
on them to see enlargements
Our final route
took us on the A45 through Dunchurch to Weedon, where we turned
right onto the A5, the Roman Watling Street. Before long the
familiar name of St. Albans appears on the Road Signs so we know
that at last we are on the home stretch. The road takes us
through Towcester and bypasses Milton Keynes. Dunstable is the
only holdup with Bank Holiday traffic but it is getting dark by
the time St. Albans Abbey appears on the horizon.
The Standard 12,
which has purred along for 17 days, appears to have liked the
journey. The only troubles we had in all that time, both fixed
easily at the roadside, were a broken windscreen wiper arm and
the loose propshaft bolts I reported on in Devon. As a
reliability trial for the car therefore this must count as a
success!
We have to report
rain on 15 of the 17 days and a lasting memory of the wipers
crawling backwards and forward across the screen. We had fun
though and thanks to all those members who welcomed us at our
various stopping off points!
Please join us on
a much shorter Roadrun at the Chiltern
Rally
Day 17 Mileage: 90
miles
Total Mileage:
1379 miles
