Flying 12 DHC goes on its holidays Part 1

Day 1: St Albans to Southampton

Aftr checking the Oil and Water we loaded the car with Luggage and Petrol and set off for the New Forest.

We put off the start due to the threatening clouds, hoping that the weather would impove before we needed to move. It never did, so we set off in the drizzling rain hoping that things woul improv before we got too wet!

The most logical Route is around London on the M25 and M3 but this is hardly user friendly for Prewar cars! Instead we chose a long way round using mainly trunk roads. The A41 through Aylesbury to Bicester was quiet but then we turned left and followed the A34 south for nearly 70 miles. The Standard bubbled along at 45-50mph which wasn't fast enough for the Caravans being towed down from the Midlands to the South Coarst, nor the articulated wagons set on reaching Southampton. The last 10 miles were on the M3 which is unavoidable and by then the Friday afternoon traffic had slowed to a crawl. It was somewhat to our relief when we turned off at Junction 3 and almost immedaiately found the Holiday Inn at Eastleigh. Fortuantely the weather had improved as we moved south so that we were now in bright evening sunshine having avoided the need to put the hood up at any time.
