A pause for some of the
cars on the Saturday
Roadrun
SATURDAY 30TH JUNE 2007
It turns out that we have
made an excellent choice for our B&B. The eight bedrooms are all occupied
by Standard Motor Club members, they are new en-suite rooms, huge and very
comfortable with Plasma TVs, baths AND walk in showers. Breakfast is a
little slow so we are slightly late at the rally site, where entrants are
already queuing at rally control.
The turnout is good, helped
no doubt by the improving weather that continues to defy
the dire predictions made in the forecast. By 10.30 am about 1/2 the
entrants have already arrived and checked in. Its time for the second
planned roadrun. After passing through Ely and Littleport our destination is Denver
Sluice. This is the limit of the tidal River Ouse and there is a lock to
allow boats to pass upstream into the remainder of the River that is used
as drainage for a large area of the Fens. Indeed much of the run was on
land below the level of the River, drained in the last century. Here lunch
is served very quickly, considering the numbers, at the Jenyns Arms, right
on the waters edge.
The return route
incorporates a visit to the Welney Wetlands Centre

Above: Evening Fish and
chips, entertainment and a singalong at Denny Abbey
On
returning to Denny Abbey we were served with 115 lots of fish and chip
meals and a similar number of desserts and fresh fruit. At 7pm we
started the sing a long by playing the original Standard Song from 1933.
John Worby started the music with the Webmasters Song performed by Ian
Leggett and Conan Lewis. This was followed by the Standard Song composed
by John Worby and introduced the different people and cars at the rally.
A general sing song followed helped along by Helen Sims, and as the rain
started, instead of wanting to end the session the members opted to
raise umbrellas and get under a tree or tent until we had finished our 1
hour entertainment.
Our
Danish visitors had missed the road run due to 2 punctures and the
need to replace the 2 tubes. Thanks to the help of Peter Lee, 2 were
located in different places and he spent the day replacing the tubes and
refitting the tyres. Our Danish friends were then able to enjoy the
Sundays events.
On return to Denny Abbey,
there was an option of a "Fish and Chips" tea for those that
wanted to partake, fortunately the rain stayed off for yet longer as there
was only makeshift tents and rally control to provide cover. We didn't
stay for it which means we also missed the community singing that followed
but is illustrated above.
Come back soon for the
lyrics of the "Standard Song".
