What model is this Vanguard Estate?

"I see no ships!"

My correspondent in New Zealand, Rod Drummond, has forwarded this picture of a rare Vanguard Estate, resting with a nice view of the Ocean at Shag Point, Otago. I could not make out whether it was a Phase 1A or 2 so I sent it to our resident Vanguard Estate expert who couldn't identify it either.

Peter Lockley writes: "I'm flattered that you think I could tell if it's a 1A or a 2. Sadly without a bonnet mascot, interior view or clear view of the grille I can't tell. There is what looks like the remains of the chrome piece between sidelights and grille which would make it a 2 but it is very
unclear and may just be the top grille bar which both have."

So, if anyone in NZ can send me some further photos, Peter will tell us what it is. However, there are under a handful of these cars surviving, so it would be nice to think that this one could be rescued. It looks as if the salty air may have got the better of it but I do hope not.

The rescuer could end up with a fine-looking Phase 1A Estate like Peter's, shown here:

I am aware that there are other cars and information that could be added to this site to make it more comprehensive, so if you have material and photographs, please let me know.  Please send me, Phil Homer, a message at: Phil Homer
