Standard 8 Archive Photo
I was born in February 1948, so this photo must be
either 1949 or 1950. It was taken in Windsor Avenue, Heaton Moor,
Stockport. That's number 2 in the background, where we lived. It was my
father's first car, and cost more second-hand than new. He worked in the
Education Department at the Town Hall, and hadn't had to pass a test to
get a driving licence in the 1930s. The L plate was for my mother.
I particularly remember the Union Jack on the bonnet. We travelled all over the place. Our longest non-stop journey was each summer, from Stockport to Calstock in Cornwall, on the river Tamar. The journey took twelve hours or so, and the car always struggled up the hill from Gunnislake. We stopped at Bristol Zoo for lunch, to see Guy the gorilla. (At least we did in later years, after my sister was born in 1951, and when my father had moved on to a four-door model; not sure what that was, but it had a wind-up windscreen and phoney running-boards.) I'd like to know what model the car is, and when the model was made - don't have a clue!
