The Rhyl in 1913,
well almost! ( click to enlarge)
Hi Phil.
I hope you and Lynda
had a good holiday
The attached
photograph (taken by Steve Smeltzer) shows my Rhyl, parked outside
12 Bedford Road, Kempston, where the original owner of my car, Dr.
George Butters lived (and had his practice) in 1913.
I just wondered if
you would be interested in putting it on the web site.

Hi Len,
Yes, here it is. The
published photo is somewhat different to the one you sent in. I have
cropped it and digitally removed most of the paraphernalia of the
21st Century ( Double glazed windows, TV and telephone wires and
boxes, Burglar alarm box, yellow parking lines) so the house looks
pretty much as it would in 1913. Unfortunately, to remove the modern
wrought iron fence would have required hours of painstaking work,
but it doesn't look to bad anyway. I suspect it might have had a
"spiked iron" fence to match the ones on top of the bays,
originally!
If you want a
high-resolution version please let me know.
Regards,
Phil
p.s. if any
contributor would like to send me a photo of their car in a
contemporary location, I will try digitally, to "turn the time
back"!
Hi Phil
Just
a few extra snippets for the useless information department!
According
to the 1901 Census, Dr George Butters was resident at the address
in 1901, so it fair assumption to make that he probably moved in
when the house was built in 1894.
In
1901 he was aged 36, so when he had the good fortune to purchase a
Standard Rhyl he would have been 48 and probably at the height of
his career. The census also says that he came originally
from Scotland.
Certainly
he was a Physician and a Surgeon, and Medical Officer of Health
for Kempston Urban District. He was President of Bedford
Medical Society in 1908.
Keep
up the good work on the web site.
Regards
Len
I am aware that there are other cars
and information that could be added to this site to make it more comprehensive, so if you
have material and photographs, please let me know. Please send me, Phil Homer, a
