Bryan Jones, Co-founder of the Manchester Standard-Triumph Group

Bryan, and his Flying 12, taking part in the filming of a 1940's TV Drama

Dr Bryan Jones B.Sc, M.B., B.Ch., F.F.O.M. (Eng), F.F.O.M. (Ire).

Honorary Life Member of the Standard Motor Club

President of the Manchester Standard Triumph Group of the Standard Motor Club

Bryan Jones died on 10th August aged 82 peacefully at home with his family around him.

To members of the Standard Motor Club and the Manchester Standard Triumph Group he was known for his unbounded energy and enthusiasm for Standard Motor Company manufactured cars and indeed all classic vehicles but this was only a small part of his wide and varied interests.

Born in Colwyn Bay in 1928 Bryan qualified in Medicine in 1952 at the University of Wales and worked in hospitals and General Practice. After becoming a Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps he specialised in Occupational Medicine being appointed Chief Medical Officer of the North Western Region of British Gas during which time he authored a research paper on ‘Hand and Arm Vibration’ and represented British Gas on international medical committees. Outside of his interest in classic vehicles he worked with St John’s Ambulance brigade, was a trained cinema projectionist, played musical instruments and managed record decks for dances, etc. Bryan was an avid collector and has numerous metal garage signs; models of buses; 1940’s motoring memorabilia; and cars. His classic vehicle collection includes a 1937 Standard Flying 12; a 1938 Standard Flying 12; a 1955 Standard Super 10; a 1970 Triumph 2000 Mk2; and until recently sold a Standard 10 7cwt Pick Up.

Bryan obtained his first driving licence in 1945 (no test in those days) and was allowed to drive his dad’s 1936 Standard Flying 12 which started his interest in Standard cars purchasing his first own car in 1955 being a new Standard 10 in elfin green – by this time he was qualified and working in General Practice. Bryan co-founded the Manchester Group of the Standard Motor Club in 1999 and through his unbounded energy and ‘bedside manner’ built it up to be the largest local Group by the time he was forced to resign as Organiser by ill health in November 2010 at which time he accepted the newly created post of Group President. Bryan remained as Treasurer until May this year.

Bryan met Morwena, his wife to be, in 1946 and with that cheeky smile of his he recalled "many hours of courting in the back seat of his dad’s Flying 12 with the rear anti-dazzle blind being used for privacy!!" Morwena helped Bryan with the Manchester Group acting as Publicity and Catering officer and, as Bryan often said, official heckler. Bryan’s oft quoted sayings are "here’s a pretty lady" and "who’s talking when I’m talking". Bryan and Morwena married in 1953 and have two daughters and five grandchildren.

Funeral Arrangements:

A church service has been arranged to take place at 11.45am on Friday 19th August, 2011 at the Hazel Grove Methodist Church, Wesley Street, Hazel Grove, SK7 4JQ. After the church service the cortege will continue to arrive 12.45pm at the Stockport Crematorium and Cemetery, Buxton Road, Heaviley, Stockport, SK2 6LS  Tel: 0161 480 5221.

As a mark of respect for Bryan and to demonstrate the affection with which he was held, we are hoping to have as many of our classics as we can to follow the cortege from the lay-by outside Bryan’s house at 58, Jacksons Lane, Hazel Grove, SK7 5JY - if you wish to take part with your classic please give me a ring to arrange. I anticipate meeting in the lay-by (which should be entered from the Bramhall end so you are pointing the right way) between 11.00 and 11.15am to give us time to get the cars in line to follow the cortege which initially will set off down Jacksons Lane in the direction of Hazel Grove and then Stockport along the A523 Macclesfield Road.

The funeral is family flowers only by request with donations to Wildlife Aid and the RSPB. A reception will later be held at the Wycliffe Hotel, 74 Edgeley Road, Edgeley, Stockport, SK3 9NQ. Please let me know by 5.00pm on Tuesday 16th August if it is your intention to come to the reception so the family can give the hotel an approximation of numbers – I am sorry this does not give you much time but such is the difficulty of these times. The family have said it would be very nice to see as many of the Group who are able to make it, with or without your classic.

Directions to the various venues are given on the attached page.
